Our loved one, a 57 year-old Viet Nam veteran, was discharged from ICU to a room less than 24 hours post-surgery, despite protests of family. (They were not full and did not need the bed.) On the floor his C-Pap machine was put in the closet and not used; he was never monitored (heart and oxygen)as ordered; the nurses sat at the desk and chatted, ignoring family's requests to call the doctor or help patient as he first begged for help, then after they over-medicated him severely and did not return to check on him, gurgled and struggled to breathe. Six hours after he was moved to the floor, he was dead, totally unnecessarily. Then the nurse falsified records, the administrator was condescending, rude and arrogant, refusing to take or return calls from the family, telling them they just needed to get counseling to handle their grief and move on and not worry about what the hospital did! Absolutely appalling and outrageous for any patients, but especially for our veterans.
