My sister had knee replacement surgery last Monday with Dr Van derVende. She lives alone and asked if I (a nurse for better than 30 years) would come from Massachusetts to be with her. For the most part our experience was wonderful. However I would like to share one disappointment we hope save other families. This occurred while my sister was in PACU following surgery. We had been told that when she was settled in PACU the staff would retrieve me from the waiting room and gave an approximate time to expect. After that time passed, I called into PACU to inquire about seeing my sister and was told they would be right out. I assumed that meant staff would be out to get me and bring me to be with her . Unfortunately the nurse chose not to provide me or my sister the opportunity for which I had travelled from Massachusetts. My sister said she had wanted my presence even when she was resting. Please ask PACU staff (Elena), whenever possible fulfill the plans PACU staff made with families before surgery.
