I have been a patient for outpatient surgery. It is atrocious. There is no patient care whatsoever. Their reputation is based on the reputation of their academic medicine, not patient care. I was horrified at how awful the nursing staff was. My PACU nurse yelled at me when I was in pain and told me to "get a hold of myself". I think she later regretted it and told my mother, "I had to be firm with her". Who would do that to a confused, disoriented person emerging from anesthesia? I know I was probably being difficult, but it was not on purpose. I was discharged after surgery without meeting the discharge criteria and had to return to the ER, which was an equally horrific experience. My surgeon, resident and anesthesiologist were also awful. . .dismissive, inattentive, condescending and arrogant. I have never been treated so disrespectfully in my entire life and found the entire experience to be the worst medical anyone in my entire family has ever received. I would not return here if my life depended on it. It's that bad.

In November 2012 I was a patient in Barnes Jewish Hospital for 5 days. My doctor is excellent. The nursing care was atocious. I am an RN. I can say, and my family agrees, that the nursing care was very, very poor. I had a TAH. One nurse was exemptionally rude. I was never offered a pan of water to wash my face, brush my teeth. My gown was never changed. I very seldom saw a nurse even when I called for one after finding my call bell on the floor. I will never again be a patient there. It was a nightmare. I have told everyone I know what a frightening experience it was. If I gave that type of nursing care with that kind of attitude, I would not have had my job for long. Are there any nurses that want to take care of patients? I have a BSN and an MSN, but I took care of my patients. I have 3 nieces in the nursing field and they were horrified at my care. Barnes mayhave the best doctors but they also have the WORST nursing care. Never again.

Be wary about using the mammography van that BJC runs. I have had two faulty mammograms that caused me extra worry, time off from work and extra expense, $325 this time, just to find that I shouldn't use the inferior services of the van. I will be using the services of the Mercy network in the future.
